One of the most difficult parts of creating a new space is deciding on a style. If you’re an interior designer or an artist, this may come easy to you. However, for the rest of the general public this can be the most stressful part and sometimes a deterrent in even starting a much-needed upgrade. These styling tips and tricks can offer you ease in deciding what style is right for you.

How to Select your Interior Design Style:

2020 will be the year of the broadest design trend options, and because we have so many years of design mistakes behind us, we can now take the most useful and aesthetically pleasing elements from each era and make them our own.

Design Trends in 2020:

Minimalist, Contemporary, Traditional, Transitional, Rustic, French Country, Shabby Chic, Coastal, Hollywood Regency, Scandinavian, Urban modern, Bohemian, Mid-century modern, Industrial, Eclectic, Modern farmhouse, Modern Country, Art Deco, and Vintage.

Now this doesn’t mean that you need to select just one! Many of these intriguing styles can work quite well together such as, Modern and Antique (pictured to the right), Hollywood Regency and Eclectic, or Scandinavian and Modern Country.

Modern and Antique offer juxtaposition in a space creating intrigue.

Do Your Research!

Here are some useful resources for selecting your design style.

House Beautiful- Design Style

When selecting a style, there is no right or wrong, and choosing the design elements should be entirely about what makes you happy.

Use your Favorite Photograph or Piece of Art to Create a Color Study.

Do you have a favorite piece of art work?

Use it as design inspiration! Contrary to popular belief, color studies are quite easy. They are a handy tool for designers and artists alike. Section out the most prominent colors within a given image by using the eye dropper tool in a design program on your computer or simply go to the paint section of your local hard ware to select color swatches that match your piece of art.

Create a Mood Board

Using your colors chosen from your color study, create a mood board with images of interiors and elements that inspire you. When Selecting colors for larger walls, remember to select lighter colors to open up the space. Use the Brighter and more unique colors for accents to add an intriguing pop. Keep in mind that beige and greige are wildly overdone and if unique is your goal, steer clear of these colors. Learn more about mood boards here.

Pinterest is a great resource for creating a mood board. Start by making a board titled with each room you desire to re-design. Save inspirational images with your design style and color scheme. It’s easy to get sidetracked so make sure that each image fits into your theme. If you find your design theme changing, it may be a good idea to go back to the style selection section and re pick the style that most fits what you are gravitating towards.

Another great resource for style and design ideas is Houzz. You can search your style and save pictures of designs that real contractors have done for real people. Save them all in your idea book to show your designer.

Selecting your style is one of the most important pieces of the design phase and it is important to lay a solid foundation before starting your project. Try to have an idea of your style and tastes before contacting an interior designer or contractor although, hiring a Design Build company to guide you through the complete process can ease quite a bit of uncertainty. When picking a style and color scheme, Design Build companies offer the luxury of having design assistance. For those who don’t know where to start, Design Build definitely has its perks!

Keep in mind that it is always a good idea to choose a Design Style that you will feel confident that you love for 10 or more years.

Trust us!

You don’t have to pick something boring to love it for 10 years!

It’s time to create the home you deserve.
